Tomorrow Isn't Promised

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." — Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

None of us know how many tomorrows we have.

Yet so often, it takes a hospital room, a funeral, or an unexpected tragedy to remind us of what truly matters.

Why do we wait until life feels uncertain to consider forgiveness? Why do we allow pride, pain, disappointment, or bitterness to occupy space in our hearts when tomorrow is never promised?

Lately, God has been reminding me that unforgiveness is a weight we were never meant to carry.

I've experienced hurt. I've wrestled with disappointment. I've waited for apologies that never came. I've held on to offenses longer than I should have, believing that somehow holding on would make the hurt feel justified. Instead, I discovered that unforgiveness often keeps me connected to the very pain I'm praying God will heal.

Maybe you've been there too. Maybe you're waiting for someone to say, 'I'm sorry.' Maybe you're hoping they'll finally acknowledge the hurt they caused. Or maybe you're carrying wounds so deep that forgiveness feels impossible.

Wherever you find yourself today, I want to encourage you with this truth: forgiveness is not about pretending the hurt never happened. It isn't saying someone's actions were acceptable. It isn't removing healthy boundaries. It isn't forgetting the pain. Forgiveness is choosing to release the burden so it no longer controls your heart.

Ephesians 4:31–32: "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger... Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Notice that Scripture begins with bitterness because bitterness has a way of taking root when hurt is left unattended.

Hebrews 12:15: "See to it... that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." Unforgiveness often grows beneath the surface before its effects become visible.

Forgiveness and Grace

Forgiveness releases the offense. Grace chooses compassion. Grace doesn't erase accountability or ignore wisdom. It leaves room for God to work in hearts—including our own.

James 2:13 reminds us: "Mercy triumphs over judgment." Those words challenge me every time I read them.

I've learned that holding on to unforgiveness doesn't stop time. It doesn't rewrite the past. It doesn't erase the hurt. It simply steals the time we still have.

None of us knows when our last conversation will be our last conversation. None of us knows when we'll have one final opportunity to extend grace, ask for forgiveness, offer forgiveness, or simply tell someone we love them. Tomorrow isn't promised. But today is.

Reflection Questions

• Is there someone I've been waiting to apologize before I can move on?

• Has unforgiveness become heavier than the hurt itself?

• Am I allowing yesterday's pain to steal today's peace?

• What would it look like to trust God with the justice while I choose peace?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal any place where unforgiveness has taken root. Help me release the hurts I've been carrying and trust You with the things I cannot change. Give me wisdom to maintain healthy boundaries, courage to walk in forgiveness, and grace to love as You have loved me. Heal the places in my heart that still need Your touch, and help me choose peace over pride, mercy over judgment, and faith over fear. Thank You for forgiving me again and again, even when I fall short. May my life reflect the same grace You so freely extend to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Reflection Challenge

Before today ends, choose one step toward healing:

• Reach out to someone you've been meaning to call.

• Pray for someone who has hurt you.

• Write a letter of forgiveness—even if you never send it.

• Ask God to reveal any unforgiveness you've been carrying.

• If it's safe and appropriate, take one small step toward reconciliation.

Remember, forgiveness is often a journey, not a single moment. Let today be the beginning of that journey.

Final Reflection

Tomorrow isn't promised. If there's forgiveness to extend, don't wait. If there's grace to offer, don't wait. If there's healing to begin, don't wait. We cannot rewrite yesterday, but by God's grace, we can choose how we live today.

Tomorrow isn't promised... but today is a gift.

May your heart be lighter because you chose to trust God with what you could no longer carry.

Be Brave. Be Strong. Be Beautiful.
